Eslam Elrihany (b. 1986) is an Egyptian born artist from Asyut. Working almost exclusively in painting, Elrihany’s approach to art is experimental, embracing the uncomfortable and celebrating new perspectives.
A preference for working with the abstract human form and a masterful approach to colour mark Elrihany’s practice. His paintings are confident in their modernist European influences with expressionistic energy and a sense of geometric disruption by way of cubist and surrealist perspectives. With a sophisticated approach to colour, working with a palette rich in opposites, the artist blends a powerful style of his own.
Elrihany has been a consistent exhibitor in the Egyptian art scene since 2013 with regular appearances in the Youth Salon (2013, 2015-2017, 2019) and the Art Fairs at Arts-Mart Gallery, Cairo (2015-2018). His work has been seen throughout Egypt in exhibitions, notably ‘Paris Oasis’ at Al-Gezira Art Center (Zamalik, 2014), ‘Avante-garde 56’ at the Art Lovers Association (Garden City, 2015), ‘Heritage Revival’ hosted by the Swiss Embassy (Al-Azhar Park, 2015), the 11th Luxor International Painting Symposium (2018), and the ‘Egypt 40th General Exhibition’ at the Museum of Modern Art (Cairo, 2018). Elrihany has participated internationally in projects in Morocco (2015), Jordan (2016), Turkey (2019) and India (2019).
As a Masters graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Minia University (2016), Elrihany’s academic interests centered on the influence of European and American conceptual art on contemporary Egyptian art. Since graduation, he has taught as assistant lecturer (painting) in the same faculty at Minia University and has undertaken additional studies in Germany (Museum of Lower Saxony, Hanover). Elrihany has received numerous accolades with repeated awards in Egypt’s annual Youth Salon (2015,2016, 2018, 2019) and has held numerous residencies including with the Museum of Fine Arts (Alexandria, 2017), the Biblioteca Alexandria (2015) and the Egyptian Cultural Council (2013).
