Mohamed El-Tahan (1946–2021) was a legendary Egyptian artist whose work captures the soulful essence of traditional Egyptian life. Born in the historic district of El-Gamaliya in Old Cairo, he drew deep inspiration from the rich heritage of his surroundings. For instance, his artworks feature dancing horses, crescent moons, ancient domes, and Islamic miniatures filled with spiritual energy. Alongside his studio work, El-Tahan dedicated much of his career to art education and cultural administration. For example, he taught fine arts at Lycée El Hurriya de Bab El-Louk from 1980 to 1992. In addition, he served as Director-General of Biennales and International Exhibitions for the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. Moreover, he held key leadership roles as Secretary-General of the National Society of Fine Arts and was an active member of the Egyptian Fine Artists Syndicate. As a result of his organizational expertise, he served as executive commissar for major events, including the 10th Cairo Biennale in 2006.
Throughout his long career, El-Tahan presented numerous acclaimed solo exhibitions across Egypt. For instance, his most famous showcases include El-Tahan Folks (2001), Mawlid (2004), and Female Theme (2018). Additionally, he participated in international exhibitions starting in 1968, including solidarity projects supporting regional humanitarian causes.
