Modern technological transformations and the connection the artists have established with the world of advanced technologies has no doubt contributed to the introduction of photography to the ranks of the artistic production of a distinguished nature and renewed return. Using the camera capabilities and depending on the artist’s vision in a qualitative leap to get out of the scope of the technical accreditation to the artistic effort which is known as (the light painting), adding this pictorial trend to the vast world of art.
It is clear that the fine-art photography produced by the artist “Bassam El Zoghby” does not belong to photography as a profession in the journalistic sense or otherwise. Instead, his art works lead us directly towards a pure artistic state. Considering light element as his color palette, and movement by chromatic interference paths, the artist largely depends in his previous works on body movement and creating a clear border of the composition within his shots, which the observer can not find it in 2D, but rather in a 3 dimensional word.
Bassam was born in Cairo in 1970, he works as a photojournalist in Al-Ahram foundation. After gaining his experiences in Algomhuria and Akhbar Al-Youm. He held many private exhibitions including the exhibition“25 years as a photojournalist” which included more than one hundred and forty press photos expressing different events (historical, political, cultural, sports, and artistic), in which he presented his works and experience through 25 years of journalistic working in the most prestigious press foundation in Egypt, documenting the history of the major political players which is connected in some ways with the events and history of his homeland.
His fifth exhibition, titled “With a Thousand Faces”, was one of the pivotal points of his artistic career through which he presents his own vision of the kinetics of the moving human face in photographic works that are full of motion and energy, A quintessential example is the motions as he captures in his Sufi dancers.
The entire exhibition was dedicated for the motion theme. The artist w highlights in a single shot a repetitive rhythm of human. This is in stark contrast to his previous exhibitions where he was depending on the movement of the entire body and he was able to move the faces and bodies that were supposed to be stationary so the shot turned into a movement and the movement to a portrait and the portrait into a life-giving interaction.
It took him nearly ten years to perfect his work on the details of the movement in the photograps. In one of his interviews, he stated that he’s always seeking renewal, and he is on his path to a brand new stage and another creative in his never ending path for self-discovery.
There is nothing in this life that does not have secrets. Photography also has elements, rules, and bases that are considered to be the components of a successful photo, but basically, I find it in the sincerity of feelings toward the hero of the shot, whether he is alive or inanimate. One of the most prominent works of the artist is his photography of an Egyptian village which was a grain store in the Pharaonic era and had a harbor and witnessed in the past a state of prosperity, but he photographed its current state as a ruin where only some stones remained. Nevertheless he forced those stones to speak and to testify how mighty our civilization was.
The artist participated in most of the forums and events concerned with both journalistic and artistic photography alike as the National General Exhibition in its 32nd and 33rd sessions, 2009 and 2010, as well as the Nile Salon for Photography 2013.
Bassam El-Zoghby also received many several awards both locally and internationally, including the first prize for the Third Nile Salon for Photography in 2001 “The Special Effects Branch”, the first prize for journalistic excellence for the photography branch from the Syndicate of Journalists in 2006, and Al-Ahram Prize for Excellence in Photojournalism in 2010, and the Japan International Salon of Photography Award in 2012.
He has private acquisitions with individuals and institutions such as the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, and the Red Sea Governorate bureau.
