Mohamed El Masry (b. 1978) is an award-winning contemporary Egyptian artist principally working in the medium of painting alongside a broader photography practice. Born in Giza, he is a graduate of Helwan University with a Bachelors in Art Education (2004) and a Diploma in Art Painting and drawing (2006). He is a Member of the Syndicate of Plastic Artists and a Member of the Arab Photographers Union.
Equally adept in painting with either oil or acrylic on canvas, Elmasry’s works demonstrate a vibrant and contemporary expressionist style, defined by his embrace of color experimentation and loose approach to figuration. Thick, luxurious brush strokes mark the artist as one enjoying the freer, painterly approach to his craft. An internationally well-travelled artist, Elmasry enjoys an experimental approach to his painting, drawing influence from the places he visits. New experiences in new locations inspire an open minded approach to his practice.
Elmasry has numerous solo exhibitions to his credit. Notable among these are projects with North Art Gallery (Jakarta, 2021), Vid Art Gallery (Belgrade, 2011), Dailes Galerija (Lithuania, 2012), Artellewa (Cairo, 2013), Ubuntu Art Gallery (Cairo, 2020), Arthausbeirut (Beirut, 2021), and Art D’Égypte (Cairo, 2021). An extensive list of group exhibitions in which he has participated includes recent highlights with the Olympia Fine Arts International Exhibition and Symposium (Assam, 2016), the Museum of Modern Art (Patna, 2018) Diwaniya Art gallery (Algeria, 2020) and the Intersect21 Art Fair (USA, 2021).
An active figure in the international biennial circuit, Elmasry has featuring in the Tehran International Biennale of Arts (2006), the Asian Art Biennale (Dhaka, 2016 and 2018), the Beijing Biennale (2008, 2012), the Berlin Biennale (2008, 2012), the Ecorea International Art Biennale (South Korea, 2012), the International Biennale for the Artist’s Book (Alexandria, 2008, 2018) and the International Biennial Festival of Portraits (Bosnia, 2018). His art is widely collected, both in Egypt and globally, with works in prominent collections in China, India, Bangladesh, Bosnia Herzegovina, Germany, Haiti, Latvia, Tunisia, Serbia, Zambia and Indonesia.
