Hany Ghabriel
Hany Ghabriel (b. 1978) is a contemporary Egyptian artist from El-Minya working in the field of sculpture. Ghabriel is an active member of Egypt’s Fine Arts Syndicate and is a graduate of Helwan University’s arts education program (2002). He followed these studies with a postgraduate diploma in arts criticism.
Beginning his career as a painter, Ghabriel developed an interest in sculpture during a sabbatical spent exploring Egypt’s museums and, in particular, the sculpture of Pharaonic Egypt. Initially working in a variety of materials such as bronze, Ghabriel began working with granite after participating in the Aswan Sculpture Symposium (2015). His enthusiasm for granite comes from an appreciation of its popularity with ancient sculptors but also involved a painterly appreciation for the colour properties of the stone, a trait Ghabriel likens to working with a gemstone.
Ghabriel’s sculpture ranges from abstract, architectural works to organic forms. He marries his inspiration from ancient Egyptian sculpture with a modern, international style. This versatile approach makes the artist equally at home with geometric abstraction through to sensual biomorphic creations. Ghabriel explains this as an interest in the relationships between “the static and the dynamic” and a relationship to the stone where you “love it to find its dimensions … how to solve it and find its secret”.
Stone appeals to Ghabriel because “it is present in all the world”. He notes that all places have their own local stone, a quality that attracts the artist to sculpture as a means of making heritage and history a permanent part of the landscape, as the ancient Egyptians did with their stone works.
Across a twenty year career, Ghabriel has exhibited throughout Egypt. Among his most notable exhibitions are ‘Icon Message’ (Cairo Atelier, 2008), ‘Symbol and Icon’ (Coptic Museum, 2010) ‘Silent Conversations’ (Saad Zagloul Cultural Center, 2011), ‘Icon’ (Cairo Atelier, 2011), ‘Mutraha’ (Awan Hall, 2012), ‘Waiting’ (Saad Zagloul Cultural Center, 2014), ‘Stone buildings’ (Samah Art Gallery, 2021), and ‘Cornerstone’ (Mahmoud Mokhtar Hall, 2022).
Ghabriel has been equally prolific exhibiting in group exhibitions with an extensive history that includes the General Exhibition (2013, 2015, 2018), and group exhibitions with Ratib Seddik Museum (2004, 2008), the Jesuit library Hall in Minya (2007), the Egyptian Ministry of Culture (2008, 2014), Al Jazeera Arts Center (2008), El Sawy Culturewheel (2008), the Youth Salon (2011), Cairo Atelier (2012), Art Corner Gallery (2013, 2016, 2018), Art Talk Gallery (2013), Note Hall (2017, 2018), Emaar (2020) and Safar Khan Gallery (2020, 2021).
Other notable showcases of Ghabriel’s practice include public art located on Mohamed Mahmoud Street (Cairo) and at Izbat Al-Sa’ida. In 2021, he exhibited internationally in the exhibition ‘All the way from the ancient city’ in Abu Dhabi.
Ghabriel has been an active participant or leader of numerous workshops throughout Egypt in areas of artistic development and beyond. These include workshops concerned with water conservation (2016, 2017), art workshops for children (2018), sculpture workshops for the blind (2014), artistic workshops in support of the “No to violence against women” campaign and the Liqa Association for Solidarity and Social Work (both 2016).
