Ahmed Omar
ARTIST / AHMED OMAR
Art is as old as humanity itself, and fortunately for art, no matter how its methods accumulated and its schools have varied throughout history, its novelty was never obliterated. On the contrary , the great creations of art continue to pump new blood into the arteries and veins leading to new paths of evolution and reinterpretation.
Every artistic school or artistic style however unique or distinct must has an original source from which the artist gets inspired. Later, the artists adds his/her own spirit imprint, objective as well as technical expertise, in order to achieve creative uniqueness.
From within this nostalgic framework , derived from his oriental background, and motivated by the formations and context of Middle Eastern civilizations, the artist Ahmed Omar drew inspiration for his work in sculpting and painting. Born in Cairo in 1960 , he graduated from the College of Fine Arts in the Graphic Department in 1985 .This directed his first production towards the simplicity of expression in the sculpting on zinc and wood (Wood Cuts). His subjects had a metaphysical dimension, and the included elements were inspired by the popular heritage. He also relied on a re-rumination of Ancient Myths, but with contemporary concepts that ensured a that the artist had a new mission, a new vision, to use those myths as an artistic means to express his social and political opinions.
His paintings , whether in the field of drawing or painting have always carried an expressive charge. He worked on discovering his own technique in depicting the human face, which sometimes tends towards abstraction. In other times you see an expressive face represented by a washed out or lost facial features.
Material has a major role in the context of disclosure within the artwork, and the same rule applies for the artist “Ahmed Omar”. It reaches the point of necessity and inevitability. In the sense that there is no alternative to the effect of the material. The smoothness of the surface, the roughness of the texture, the formulations of units and elements contrast with the background and transfer his work of art to the ranks of archaeological murals. This is the feature which is shared both in his figurative paintings as well as his printing/engraving work. This technique helped him to confirm his ideas in an exemplary manner but the materials he uses also play a major role in expressing his topics. Yes, it is the material with its color, density, and smell!!
If the color intensity is something that characterizes the influencers, It must be admitted that the early influencers used this doctrine to reveal the aesthetics of the environment by keeping artists away from being inspired by a narrative of nature or a conceptual narrative, and focusing on plastic aesthetics and visual value only. In most cases, the color palette of Ahmed Omar creates a hidden balance between cold and warm colors to liberate the painting from the captivity of its own identity, placing it within the neutrality of the thin mask that he has placed on each of them.
In some of his works, he was influenced by the letters that he used which is characterized by brevity as each letter has an indication of its thickness, size and moral connotations symbolizing its roots in mystical text, religious architecture, and the environmental landscape. By integrating Arabic letters into his art works Ahmed Omar gives them solemnity that makes the analysis and interpretation of his paintings an infinite circle of codes. In his writings he adds a greater vagueness that challenges anyone who might think that the artist has put the keys to the interpretation of the painting in writing, yet the text is intentionally inexplicable.
Ahmed Amin held several private exhibitions, including two exhibitions at the Gezira Art Center 1996-1999, and another exhibition at Cairo Atelier 2008, and his fourth exhibition was entitled (Military and Freedom) 2012. He has many distinguished local and international participations beginning from 1983 until now. Among the most prominent presentations of his works are the Youth Salon in 1989-1990-1991-1992, Muscat International Biennale 1992, and the Exhibition of Egyptian contemporary engraving in Italy 1992, as well as exhibitions in India, Japan, Spain and the USA.
His talent and daring in dealing with materials and mixing them and bringing new materials all the time, blurs the boundaries between paintings and sculpting. This resulted in the artist receiving several awards including the first prize in graphics at the first Youth Salon in 1989, the second prize in 1990, and the State Prize for Creativity in 1993. In addition to the grand prize and golden medal of the 1991 Muscat International Biennale of Graphic Art, and the Appreciation Award for the Graphic Triennale 1996. Some of his artworks were acquired by collectors all over the Middle East, as well as art museums like the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo.
